The Science of Science: Discovery, Communication and Impact (SoS:DCI) program at NSF is designed to advance theory and knowledge about increasing the public value of scientific activity. Science of Science draws from multiple disciplinary and field perspectives to advance theory and research about scientific discovery, communication and impact.
Black firefighters experience institutional racism in forms that include double standards and negative stereotypes, according to a recent study by CORD Fellow James Wright II and CORD Graduate Fellow Victoria Pham (ASU School of Public Affairs). The findings, published in Review of Public Personnel Administration (ROPPA) with Collin Cox (Florida International University), are based on interviews with Black firefighters conducted in 2021 in a medium-sized fire department in the southern U.S.
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is increasingly used in research, yet we know little about how to integrate it effectively and transparently into social science experiments. Using one of my working papers as an illustrative example, I discuss how AI can streamline and advance the methodological aspects of experimental research in three ways. First, I explain how researchers can design simulation-based power analyses that account for parameters and assumptions often overlooked by baseline tools such as G*Power.
CORD Director Julia Melkers leads a multi-national project examining how academic engineering transforms to create public value in times of crisis, threat, and disruption. With co-PIs Molly Ott and Kurt Paterson, the project “Resilient Engineering to Advance Public Value and Innovation in Research Periphery Countries” brings together an interdisciplinary team from the U.S., Ukraine, Poland, Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania to advance scholarly understanding of organizational adapation in times of crisis, and provide actionable findings for organizational and programmatic design strategies in engineering schools.
Funding for the $1M two-year project comes from the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) (EAGER IMPRESS-U) and the U.S. National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine; Polish NCN National Science Centre; ETAG - Estonian Research Council; Latvian Rīga Stradiņš University and Rīgas Tehniskā universitāte (Riga Technical University); and the Research Council of Lithuania.
