Stuart Bretschneider

Biography

Stuart Bretschneider is a Foundation Professor of organization design and public administration at Arizona State University’s School of Public Affairs. He is also director of research and a senior research associate at the school’s Center for Organization Research and Design. Previously Bretschneider was a Maxwell Professor of Public Administration and International Affairs and director of the Center for Technology and Information Policy at the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs, Syracuse University, before arriving at Arizona State University. He was also associate dean and chair of the Public Administration Department between 2005 and 2011 at the Maxwell School. Currently, his research has focused on how public organizations make use of information technology and the effects of those technologies on public organizations; how public organizations employ forecasting technology and organize to carry out forecasting activities; and how sector differences affect administrative processes.  He also has done work in science and technology policy.  His work also includes numerous funded projects associated with the evaluation of public policy in the energy, environment and technology areas. His current research is focused on why non-U.S. recipients of U.S. doctoral degrees return to their countries of origin. A past president of the International Institute of Forecasters (IIF), Bretschneider was also a director of the IIF. He was the managing editor for the Journal of Public Administration Research and Theory from 1992-2000.
